My friend kicked me out of his wedding – the reason completely shocked me

My wife and I were excitedly preparing for Tom’s wedding. It wasn’t a huge reception with hundreds of guests, but rather a family-style celebration with about seventy guests. Mostly relatives, a few close friends. It promised to be an intimate, pleasant evening.

– Look at the decorations! – Sarah smiled. – They really went all out.

And they truly did. Tom and Linda radiated happiness during the ceremony. It was touching, many people even had tears in their eyes.

Dinner was announced as a buffet. The tables were called up by group, naturally the family first.

– Completely understandable – said Sarah.

The first tables’ plates were piled high with food. I saw that some people went back for seconds, even thirds. A bad feeling began to grow in me.

– I hope there’s enough for everyone – I whispered.

When we were finally called, there was barely anything left. A few pieces of salad, a little side dish, practically no meat. Disappointed, we sat back down at our table.

? IS THIS SERIOUS? – JANE LOOKED AT HER EMPTY PLATE.
– Is this serious? – Jane looked at her empty plate.

Bob just shook his head. – I’m still hungry.

The mood changed quickly. Conversations grew quieter, smiles disappeared.

Tom came over to us.

– Is everything okay? – he asked worriedly.

– Honestly? Not really – I said. – The food ran out.

I saw he felt uncomfortable. – I thought it would be enough…

After he left, Bob joked under his breath:

? WE COULD ORDER PIZZA.
– We could order pizza.

We laughed. The wine was working on us too. Then the joke turned into an idea.

– Why not? – I said. – At least we won’t stay hungry.

We chipped in the money, and I ordered four large pizzas and chicken wings. Thirty minutes later they arrived.

When I brought in the boxes, many eyes turned toward us.

– You really ordered pizza? – someone asked in disbelief.

– Yes. If you didn’t get food, feel free to take some – I said.

At our table the good mood returned. We shared the pizza with a few other hungry guests as well. I felt like we were sticking together.

I DIDN’T NOTICE THAT THE BRIDE’S FAMILY DIDN’T SEE IT THAT WAY.
I didn’t notice that the bride’s family didn’t see it that way.

Suddenly Linda’s father was standing in front of us, with a stern face.

– Where did this pizza come from?

– We ordered it. There wasn’t any food left – I answered calmly.

The man looked at the boxes. – Can I have a slice?

Honestly, by then I’d had enough.

– Sir, your family ate the most from the buffet. We barely got any. Now we’re finally eating.

His face turned red. – You won’t share?

? NO – I SAID FIRMLY.
– No – I said firmly.

Minutes later Tom came back, visibly tense.

– Mike… I’m sorry, but you have to leave now.

– What? Why?

– Linda and her father think ordering pizza was disrespectful. It’s causing tension.

I looked at him devastated. – We were hungry, Tom.

– I know. But please, leave now. We’ll talk later.

We gathered our things and left. We sat in silence in the taxi. The end of the evening was bitter.

A FEW DAYS LATER TOM CALLED.
A few days later Tom called.

– We need to talk. I want to apologize.

He told me that Linda had argued with her family. It turned out they truly hadn’t ordered enough food. Her father is ashamed.

– He’s organizing a “post-wedding party” in August – Tom said. – Everyone can come. Plenty of food, drinks, music. No one will go hungry.

I smiled.

The whole story was absurd. One missing dinner almost ruined a friendship.

But sometimes the most awkward moments lead to the best continuation.
