My Husband Left Me Alone During Labor to Help His Mother with Grocery Shopping – Not Long After, He Learned a Harsh Lesson

I never thought I would one day be telling this story, but I have to get everything that happened out of me… and the lesson my husband learned in the harshest way possible.

I am thirty-two years old, and I was expecting our first child.

My husband, Dave, is thirty-four, and he has always had an especially close relationship with his mother.

Marlene was the kind of woman who called her son over the smallest thing and expected Dave to drop everything for her immediately.

— Aria, Mom called. I’ll be right back — he often said.

And then he would rush off to rescue her.

I used to think it was sweet.

Until the day I went into labor.

I WAS THIRTY-EIGHT WEEKS PREGNANT, AND I KNEW THERE WAS NOT MUCH TIME LEFT.
That evening, the contractions began.

At first, everything was going fine. I had been in labor for about six hours when Dave’s phone rang.

— Just breathe, sweetheart — he said, squeezing my hand. — Our little girl will be here soon.

Then he stood up and stepped into the hallway to take the call.

When he came back, he looked strangely tense.

A few minutes later, another message arrived.

He read it, then glanced around the room nervously.

— WHAT HAPPENED? — I ASKED WORRIEDLY.
He looked at me as if I were bothering him.

— I have to go, Aria. But I’ll be quick. I promise.

— What?! — I gasped through another contraction. — Dave, I need you! Our child is about to be born!

He let out a heavy sigh.

— I know. Of course I know. But Mom called… she really needs me.

I almost cried out.

— What does she need help with?! Are you seriously leaving me here because of your mother?!

— I’LL BE RIGHT BACK — HE SAID. — I SWEAR.
He kissed my forehead… then hurried away.

I could not believe it.

I simply could not process that my husband had actually left me in the middle of labor.

I knew he had always jumped whenever his mother called.

But THIS?

Was this the man I had married?

I felt completely abandoned in one of the most vulnerable moments of my life.

I TRIED TO FOCUS ON MY BREATHING.
I tried to focus only on giving birth.

Then my phone rang.

Dave had texted.

“I’ll be back soon, Aria. Mom just needs help.”

“What happened? Is she okay?” I wrote back immediately.

“Of course. The grocery bags are just too heavy.”

I thought I had read it wrong.

“ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW? I AM IN LABOR, AND YOU LEFT ME HERE BECAUSE OF GROCERIES?!”
The answer arrived within seconds.

“Yes. And don’t be so selfish, Aria. Mom needs me.”

Selfish.

While I was about to give birth to our daughter.

My blood pressure rose so sharply that one of the nurses rushed over immediately.

— What happened, sweetheart? — she asked worriedly, looking at the monitor.

I just cried.

I COULD NOT SPEAK PROPERLY.
— Tell me — she encouraged gently. — You’ll feel better afterward.

— My husband… left me here — I whispered. — His mother needed help with groceries.

The nurse looked completely stunned.

— You are in labor… and he left because of grocery bags?!

I nodded.

— Is there someone we can call? — she asked. — Someone who can be here with you?

— My dad — I said.

LUCKILY, DAD WAS NEARBY, PICKING UP FAST-FOOD DINNER SOMEWHERE WHEN I CALLED.
He rushed to the hospital immediately.

— Sweetheart… — he said when he walked into the room.

The smell of fried chicken instantly filled the space.

— Where is Dave?

I told him the truth.

And meanwhile, the contractions were getting closer and closer.

My little girl was already on her way.

— GLORIA… — I LOOKED AT THE NURSE. — COULD YOU RECORD THE BIRTH? DAVE WAS SUPPOSED TO, BUT HE HAS OUR CAMERA.
— Of course, sweetheart — Gloria smiled. — I’ll ask an intern, and I’ll hold your hand the whole time.

Not long afterward, my beautiful little girl was born.

Gabrielle.

Without Dave.

Instead, Gloria stood on one side of me, and Dad stood on the other.

When I held Gabi in my arms for the first time, I was completely overwhelmed with emotion.

Happiness.

Love.

And deep pain.

Dad sat down beside me and gently squeezed my shoulder.

— He is going to regret this, sweetheart — he said quietly. — But right now, just focus on your daughter.

Tears streamed down my face.

— I can’t believe he left us… — I whispered. — How could he choose his mother over his own family?

— Dave will have to live with that decision — Dad replied. — But you are strong. And you are not alone.

Later, once it was certain that both Gabi and I were fine, Dad took me home with him.

WHEN DAVE FINALLY CAME BACK TO THE HOSPITAL, WE WERE ALREADY GONE.
He kept calling.

He sent messages.

I did not answer.

Instead, I left him something.

Dad always carries a laptop with him, so I asked him to give me a flash drive.

— What do you need it for? — he asked.

— I’m putting the birth video on it for Dave.

DAD LOOKED AT ME FOR A LONG TIME, THEN NODDED.
I wrote a letter too.

“Dear Dave,

This is what you missed.

This was the once-in-a-lifetime, unrepeatable moment you chose not to be present for.

When I needed you most, you abandoned me.

Our daughter deserved to have both of her parents beside her in her first moments.

This video shows the strength and pain you will never experience in person.

I HOPE YOU NOW UNDERSTAND HOW DEEPLY YOU DISAPPOINTED US.
Maybe now you will finally understand what it means to be a husband and a father.

— Aria and Gabi”

A few days later, Dad organized a family gathering so everyone could meet Gabrielle.

I did not invite Dave.

Even so, he showed up.

He looked broken and desperate.

— Please, let me explain — he said in a trembling voice.

I CROSSED MY ARMS.
— What do you want to explain? That grocery bags were more important than your own daughter’s birth?

— I am so sorry, Aria — he said. — I got caught between you and Mom. I made the wrong choice. Please forgive me. I will do anything to make it right.

I just looked at him.

— You left me alone in the most vulnerable moment of my life. How am I supposed to know this won’t happen again?

— I know I ruined everything — he said. — I hate myself for it. Please… let me prove that I can be a good father.

For a long time, I did not answer.

Finally, I spoke.

— THIS IS YOUR ONLY CHANCE, DAVE. WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH. YOU HAVE TO PROVE IT.
He nodded immediately.

— I swear, I will never fail you again.

Since then, he has apologized countless times.

One evening, while we were putting Gabi to bed, he looked at me.

— I know I’ve already said it… but I truly am sorry. I never want to miss anything again.

I believe him.

But I am still waiting for his mother to apologize too.
